Thor: Ragnarok

The hype was real with Thor: Ragnarok. I loved the idea of funny Thor in space with the Hulk bro-ing it up, and given Marvel’s track record, it was bound to be heaps of fun to watch, even if the plot may be a bit thin and the villains poor.

But man, did Thor: Ragnarok surprise me. While the plot and pacing was off, it defied my expectations and can handily call itself one of the most enjoyable Marvel films to date, plus it has an awesome villain.

Thor: Ragnarok – Trailer

This looks like it’s going to be SO MUCH FUN. Lots of Guardians vibes here, what with the music and the Dave Bautista/Drax humour when Thor meets Hulk. Cate Blanchett might actually make an epic Marvel villain for once, but I’m not holding my breath on that one. I spot Loki too, but he doesn’t seem to be the main villain this time, so we’ll see how that plays out.

The colours are pretty vibrant here (including for the film title), which further emphasises the more cheerful tone the movie seems to be headed towards. Given that the press so far seems to hint at some sort of ‘buddy road trip’ film, I’m totally expecting the trailer to only be showing the early parts of the film, and Thor is going to escape with Hulk and try to find their way back home.

HYPED.

Spider-Man: Homecoming – Trailer

I adored Tom Holland’s version of the teenage Spider-Man in Civil War, and it looks like much of the same here. It cuts a different tone to the other MCU films, and I look forward to what it has in store. I mean, this trailer is nowhere near as entertaining as the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer, but this feels like it’s going to be a meaningful addition to the Marvel franchise unlike Thor.

Also, please don’t show us Uncle Ben dying. I figured it’s probably not going to happen given that they didn’t make Peter quote that overused line verbatim. But I still have to say it. Spider-Man is into its 3rd franchise now. It’s the most popular Marvel character if I’m not mistaken. EVERYONE knows his origin story. Let’s not repeat it again, yea?

Logan – Trailer

Wolverine is the sort of character that’s supposed to be ill-fitting in the X-Men family, but sometimes the films forget about it. His is the sort of character that will do great in a gritty, down-to-earth story, alone against the world. But we only got X-Men: Origins and Wolverine as standalone films. While the former was bad and the latter was okay, it’s not really delving into the complexities of the character or doing anything other than making an action flick and squeezing as much money out of fans as the studios can.

But this, oh man.

Logan is based off, as we’ve all hoped, the Old Man Logan storyline where Wolverine is old and his powers are fading. And given the tone of the trailer, it’s exactly the kind of movie that Wolverine is made for. Hugh Jackman can also finally stretch some acting muscles with this movie, and it’ll be a fitting end for what must be one of the longest runs for an actor in a character ever.

At least, I hope Wolverine dies and ends his arc here. They can reboot him a couple of years down the line, but let’s at least see Hugh Jackman a shot at making Wolverine more than just an antihero who’s less anti and too much hero.
