Study Says White Extremists Have Killed More Americans in the U.S. Than Jihadists Since 9/11

TIME

Since 9/11, white right-wing terrorists have killed almost twice as many Americans in homegrown attacks than radical Islamists have, according to research by the New America Foundation.

In their June study, the foundation decided to examine groups “engaged in violent extremist activity” and found that white extremists were by far the most dangerous. They pointed to the recent Emanuel AME Church shooting in Charleston, S.C., and the 2012 attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, as well as many lesser-known attacks on Jewish institutions and on police. They found that 48 people were killed by white terrorists, while 26 were killed by radical Islamists, since Sept. 11.

The study also found that the criminal justice system judged jihadists more harshly than their non-Muslim counterparts, indicting them more frequently than non-jihadists and handing down longer sentences.

#DistractinglySexy Trends in Response to Nobel Scientist’s Sexist Remarks

TIME

On Wednesday, Nobel Prize winner Tim Hunt resigned from his position as honorary professor at University College London after telling a conference in South Korea that it’s distracting to work alongside “girls” in laboratories because “they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry.”

Since then, the hashtag #distractinglysexy has been trending on social media, as women have been posting photos of the unglamorous life of a research scientist to ridicule the embattled biochemist, who shared the 2001 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for research on how cells divide.

There were also jokes about history’s most famous female scientists:

Final Audio Design Heaven IV

FAD Heaven IVMy terrible camera skills and the use of my phone camera really doesn’t do the beauty of these things justice.

I learnt of the crazy gorgeous and niche-tuning Final Audio Design via Head-Fi.org, and I’ve lusted after these babies for a long while now. While I understand that FAD are more sound than design, you can’t run away from the fact that the stuff they make looks ridiculously beautiful.

Ocharaku Donguri Raku [Koicha]

Ocharaku Donguri Raku KoichaThey say curiosity killed the cat. I don’t have a cat for it to kill, but it certainly mugged my bank account.

There’s something about Japanese boutique audio brands that really call out to me. The stuff they come up with is really quite unique, and they draw my attention like nobody’s business. Coupled with the fact that they are pretty exclusive to the domestic market, it makes them akin to collectors’ items.

Ocharaku first caught my attention with the Flat-4 Sui, which had a very interesting concept behind it. Then they had the Donguri, but as with the Flat-4, I felt my budget couldn’t handle that sort of cost for interest’s sake. But the Donguri Raku came along, and I was sold.

Fairy Tail 439

I haven’t blogged about manga in a long while now, maybe because I gave up on ranting about Naruto, and Fairy Tail was never really worthy of big criticism. Rather, it just annoyed me. After all, it never raised my hopes of it becoming anything more than just an above average piece of entertainment (now below average).

But I’m more than a little angry at this chapter. Sure, I got mad at how Zeref is the most useless bogeyman since bogeymen existed, and how Mashima-sensei is chopping down two main villains in Acnologia and Zeref into just one. I got mad at Zeref’s backstory appearing out of completely nowhere, with zero narrative prompt to bring about the flashback, and I hated the utterly pointless Avatar arc. I also got real pissed writing the Edolas arc given the number of plot holes I found and had to address. I didn’t rant about them here though.

I wouldn’t say that chapter 439 compares in the intensity of my anger over other chapters, but it’s the kind of thing that slowly drives you up the wall because it looks good on the surface, but stinks of stupidity when you delve deeper.

This Movie Will Pass The Bechdel Test – CH2

This makes me MUCH more relieved. I always felt like I didn’t write female characters well, and I don’t think I ever passed the Bechdel Test for La Tormenta. Mad Max made me feel inadequate and chauvinistic, but this at least puts my mind at ease. A quick check in Wikipedia tells me I definitely passed the sexy lamp test, but I don’t think I passed the Mako Mori test (which is VERY hard to do in a story with a male main character). Oh well, the only way is up, right?
